About the Studio The Cryptogamic Botany Company is Alex Frost's studio for work at the intersection of science and art. In our work, we rely on science--an investment of time in detailed study--to guide our interpretation and presentation of natural objects. Through this process, we aim to reveal value and to celebrate things that might otherwise be disregarded. Some of the key players in the studio are shown to the right. (We collectively decided that we look better in black and white.) |

Alex Frost Alex started all this in 1996. After six years of work as a research scientist, Alex left academia to pursue his interests in combining art and science.... In early 2001, Alex hired Molly, reopened the studio, and returned to art and design as a therapeutic escape from his day job(s)...
Molly Fallon Molly's arrival in 2001 brought the reopening of Alex's studio. The only trained artist in the group (RISD '00), Molly is responsible for most of the studio's recent work. For a short time she was able to tell people that she collected seaweed for a living, but now there's really a lot more to our work than that...
Kate Herman Kate is "the editrix".... For a long time, Kate pretended not to know anything about the work in the studio, but she revealed herself by arriving one day with a custom-made plant press...
Eric Roberts (Dr.) Eric actually holds a PhD in botany... Eric makes important contributions to the studio in plant and protist identification, in algal troubleshooting, and as a foil to Alex's (occasional) exuberance. We told Eric that we wouldn't use this picture...
